The Palais Garnier, at métro Opéra is the ornate 19th century home of the Opéra National de Paris. The Opéra also has a modern theater at Place de la Bastille, so confirm the location if you buy tickets.

I had admired the exterior of the Palais Garnier on many occasions, but in all my visits to Paris I had never toured the interior. It was cloudy and rainy on Monday so I set out to rectify this strange omission.

The interior décor exceeded my high expectations. It intentionally rivals Versailles in richness, though of course not in size.

The auditorium was off-limits during my tour due to a rehearsal but I was able to get some photos and two video clips just before a performance of Alceste by Gluck on Tuesday evening:
